Mickey, if i get message like this when i plugged in my External:

'Windows could not load installer for volume in windows xp'

How can i fix it?

have you been uninstalling some windows programs such as messger etc?

the acrobat, not sure the others...

sodog, I think the easiest way for you is to do System Restore.  But if you wanna be adventurous, go look into the c:/windows/system folder and see if you find a sfcfiles.old, if so, rename it to sfcfiles.dll and reboot; if you find sfcfiles.dll (instead of .old), copy it to c:/widnows/system32 and reboot.  Some folks on the web got similar issue and fixed by doing that.  

I only have sfc.dll & sfc_os.dll

why don't you fly to Toronto and stright back to HK????? toronto has direct flight to HK.....

sodog, ok.  I think some system files are either corrupted or got overwritten by other softwares, and therefore, it wasn't able to install the proper driver for your hdd.  

Have you tried plugging it to another computer and see if it works?

You may try the following (or maybe hear from egg first, as he is more familiar with system and hardware):

- go to Command Prompt
- type in: sfc /scannow <enter>

It will does a scan on your windows protected system files, and for any system files that were overwritten, it will restore the correct version from cache.  You will need your WinXP CD.  For more information on sfc, go to:
