in US, a family has higher exemption.  but it doesn't always mean that filing as a family (we called it married filing jointly and married filing separately) is always better.  

my alberta health care plan is free (coz i declared i am a poor student b4 when i was still in school, and they gave me exemption until the end of 2008)
and alberta has taken away the health plan premium now, so i don't need to pay either......

only our compnay health benefit is common-law
but we need to fill as common-law no matter what, for his immigration

I used to doing the tax myself.  they have free software to help.  but now I go to an accountant.  she always use the software to try both filing types and see which one we end up paying less tax, then use that one

canadian law is as long as 2 people have been living under the same roof for 1 year can declared themselves as common-law partners and can have all the benefits as a married couple
