Why Cloning of Window Vista from one HDD to another HDD is not possible?
I tried Acronis True Image 8.1.945 and Ghost 11 to clone the whole HDD.  It failed with Ghost 11.  Although it reported successful with Acronis True Image, the cloned HDD just won't boot.  Can anyone help out?

I had been unable to use Ghost 10 CD (which allows you into Ghost 8.2 Corporate) to image Vista -- even "sysprepped" Vista.

But if I ran those 3 commands *before* sysprepping:


bcdedit /set {bootmgr} device boot

bcdedit /set {default} device boot

bcdedit /set {default} osdevice boot



Then I *could* image Vista with the Ghost 10 CD!  Now, if I could only figure out my issuses with Sysprep not doing what it should be doing as well!

It is quite complicated to sysprepping a virtual machine.  One must try several times to see if it works which is extremely time consuming.  Your link is very helpful.  Thanks and I'll dig out more from the microsoft forum.  I learnt from a friend that Ghost 12 might solve the problem, but you might have to install it under Window environment which is not very desirable.  Anyway, I'll give it a go.  This problem has to be sorted out some times.  Thank you once again.

Sorry for the late reply.  Although I don't have the answer, I am kind of interested in the issue.

So is that a problem with the Imaging software that is not ready to image Vista?  Or it is a way Vista is protecting itself?

As I undersdtand, VISTA make a lot of change on the boot area! Although XP 32-bit is new technology, but still base on DOS concept. VISTA is similar to MAC OS, that's why cannot clone to another HDD. May be latest verion of cloning software will handle this issue.

I've done a clone of vista from an 80gig to 160gig using acronis true image 9.1 workstation.
After the clone, vista will prompt you that it needs to be repaired, so boot using the vista disc and do a repair installation, takes only minutes for it to repair the boot sector.

I tries Ghost 12 on Window Vista and Window XP.  It worked fine with XP but not Vista.  Ghost 12 claimed to be compatible with Vista.  During installation and setup of Ghost 12 in Vista,  a message saying `Norton Ghost VProConsole has stopped working' and a program caused the problem and Window will shut down the computer.  
I agree with Ultraegg.  The latest cloning software is not ready for Vista yet.  I also went into support.microsoft and found nothing regarding to the sysprep of Vista.  Really frustrated.

After two days trying different versions of Acronis True Image and Ghost, I concur with JimmyTim's way of cloning.  I tried with the ATI Home 10 and again with ATI Server 8.1.  After cloning, I have to use my Vista disk to boot up, then select Language.  Vista will prompt you what to do next.  Choose 'Repair', it will repair the boot sector.  It is done.  With Ghost versions 8, 9 or 11, I got the same results as ATI.  It also required Vista disk for repair and there is an error message saying 'MBR 3 error' during boot up.  After boot, it still worked fine.  Every time I booted up, the same message appeared.  I trust that ATI has a better compatibility.

Thank you for sharing your experience here, it is a gem to me because I'm plannning to do the same job as the one you've just done. I have dual boot to XP and Vista which are in different partiitions of the same drive, but it is running out of space, so I just bought a much bigger drive and going to clone my OSs into it. I would try to use Acronis True Image Home 10 and Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 for my job, hope its Boot Manager could rewrite the MBR properly.
